The Midnight Gospel

Just two days ago on April 20th, Netflix released an animated adult comedy called, The Midnight Gospel. The series follows spacecaster Clancy through his unreeling adventures interviewing beings from dying worlds.

I was immediately captured by the show’s bright colors and psychedelic, vapor wave style. The messages implemented in the interviews Clancy conducts are centered on spiritual and metaphysical topics. Prior to the animation, the dialogue is recorded in a podcast setting hosted by Duncan Trussell, with the main plot in mind. The free-flowing animation complimented by the organic feel of conversation maintains the viewers engagement, seeing as I binge watched the whole season in a day.

The topics discussed are enough to inspire an artist like myself. I have had similar conversations with friends in the past, but they are the type of subject humans often reflect on. The themes present throughout this show can be explored deeply in a variety of artistic ways, and the animators approached them excellently.

The art style is bold, colorful, trippy, and inviting. I am especially fond of the way the artists implemented gradients and different textures, as I try to incorporate that in my own work. I am also a huge fan of the different characters and styles in this show and even mentioned cosplaying some outfits to my boyfriend.
